Nespresso VertuoLine Review: Should You Buy It? [MUST-READ]

My relationship with different single-serve coffee machines has had its ups and downs. It actually started way back in high school. I have had several coffee machines (didn’t have my VertuoLine back in the day – was definitely a great upgrade from my previous machine – which is why I’m doing the Nespresso VertuoLine review), but none could make a nice cup of coffee that rivaled what I get at my favorite coffee shop.

Of course, along came the Vertuo and changed the game – if you check the comparison of Nespresso machines, you’ll see that VertuoLine the best overall Nespresso machine.

In short, the Nespresso Vertuo is the first single-serve coffee machine that offers barista-class coffee. Fast. You won’t see another one quite like it:

Nespresso Vertuoline should cost at least $300 given the coffee it makes. But does it? Here is the current price. Surprised?

For the longest time, I used to believe the coffee flavor at the coffee shop is somehow magically enhanced by the ambiance and the place’s décor, but that was just a coffee-induced illusion I guess. This was all before I got my Keurig K575 and eventually the Nespresso VertuoLine (which I currently have and operate – an awesome machine, by the way).

My First Thoughts On Nespresso VertuoLine Single-Serve Coffee Machine

So eventually I decided to prove myself wrong with the latest single-serve coffee machine from Nespresso; the VertuoLine that comes with an Aeroccino Plus milk frother. That actually the one Nespresso coffee machine that got discontinued but VertuoLine fans (or addicts, it’s coffee after all) called for it to come back. And like Lassie, it fortunately did!

The price of Nespresso VertuoLine is about $250 (check the current price to be sure) and, in the end, for an excellent coffee maker, this is actually quite an affordable price:

By the way, if you are new to single-serve coffee machines you should read our in-depth single-serve guide. It’ll give you some tips on how to choose the best one for you. Of course, VertuoLine is on the list as well.

From Nespresso VertuoLine reviews I had heard, the machine is made for espresso fans like me who love their best quality coffee delivered fast and without a fuss. I gave the new machine a test run and I have plenty of good and bad things to say about it.

VertuoLine is a new model released by the famous coffee machine maker, Nespresso. It is a single-serve coffee machine made of revolutionary technology that ensures you enjoy the true flavor of freshly brewed coffee in the true espresso style.

Nespresso VertuoLine Review

The machine comes with a Nespresso Aeroccino Plus milk frother which gives you the ability to make cold or hot milk froth with a single touch of a button. It further uses centrifusion extraction technology to give you high-end coffee with crème.

Nespresso VertuoLine is an impressive machine that heats up pretty fast (fifteen seconds or so, on occasion twenty seconds if it as sleepy as I am in the morning). Here are some quick review facts on Nespresso VertuoLine coffee maker:

  • Simple to use (when you just woke up, easy is good).
  • Pretty small – won’t take much of kitchen space.
  • Used for authentic espresso and freshly brewed coffee with creme (aka cappuccino, duh).
  • Touch a button and you get either an 8 oz. cup of coffee or a 1.35 oz. espresso.
  • Uses 2 different Nespresso VertuoLine pod sizes (small pods for espresso, big for coffee).

If you compare it to other Nespresso coffee makers like little Nespresso Inissia, you can see that Nespresso Vertuo is the best Nespresso machine according to its features. Being the best also means that it has the higher price tag.

However, I found the machine a bit limiting in the available customization options. I mean some of us really love meddling things around to get that perfect flavor, but the machine doesn’t provide a very wide range of options.

Nespresso’s monopoly over the pods you can use with this machine felt a bit exploitative in my opinion. I found ordering pods too much of a hassle.

VertuoLine Stormio, Odacio and Melozio pods are the best sellers. Odacio is my VertuoLine pod of choice.

Like all other humans who value the health of their palates, I don’t take scalding hot coffee, but a reasonably hot cup always does the trick. I can’t really complain about the temperature of coffee the Nespresso VertuoLine machine offers but would love for it to make a hotter coffee (if you want to drink it right away, that’s actually great, but I drink my coffee for 10 minutes or so).

Nespresso VertuoLine Review: Let’s Go Deeper

If you used or know about the OriginalLine Nespresso machine, the first thing you’ll notice is that the Grand Cru capsules in this new model look different. The effect?

OriginalLine pods don’t fit into the reviewed Nespresso VertuoLine machine. VertuoLine capsules are the upgraded version.

The difference is mainly because VertuoLine uses Centrifusion technology, which spins the capsules to extract the perfect flavor, while OriginalLine relies on 19 bar pressure to extract flavor. Centrifusion technology is quite unique and works perfectly well.

Nespresso VertuoLine Capsules
Nespresso VertuoLine capsules can cost less than $1.50 if you get a good deal.

VertuoLine gives you a choice of 12 different capsules.

You get a sampler pack containing each of the 12 varieties when you purchase the machine. You can then sample each capsule to find out which type suits your taste. Eight of the 12 capsules are for brewing coffee, while four make espresso.

Breakdown of the Nespresso VertuoLine sampler capsules that come free with the machine:

  • Out of 8 coffee capsules, you get 4 mild-to-bold coffee strengths. You can choose which strength wakes you up the best.
  • Two capsules have roast flavors, vanilla and hazelnut.
  • Oh, you also get a decaffeinated VertuoLine capsule. But what’s the point of drinking decaf, right?
  • 4 VertuoLine Espresso pods are on-point.

Reviewing Nespresso VertuoLine Features – Test Run Findings

We did a test run of some of the key features mentioned by the coffee machine’s manufacturer. Believe me, there are quite a good number of them, and so far we can report that Nespresso really did go to great lengths to ensure this machine takes your coffee making experience to a higher level.

They actually created a machine that allows you to make fresh coffee or genuine espresso with a single touch of a button.

When I read about its Centrifusion extraction technology, the first thing that came to mind was turbines and motors, but later realized it meant that I simply need to insert the capsule, close the lever, and the machine will spin the capsule at a speed of 7,000 rpm to blend the coffee and water creating a rich crema.

Talking of capsules, the machine delivers great coffee and espressos thanks to its hermetically-sealed capsules. You get 8 coffee capsules and 4 espressos, each with a varying degree of strength and taste.

It even has an automated blend recognition feature (that’s a mouthful). It’s actually an intelligent extraction technology that can recognize each Grand Cru blend by reading the barcode along the rim of the capsule. The barcode informs the machine what brewing parameters to use such as how hot the water should be and other settings. And the best thing?

You only have to touch a button and advanced brewing tech happens before your eyes.

Aeroccino Plus milk frother is a great addition to the single-serve coffee maker. It gives you a fast one-touch way of preparing cold or hot milk froth.

A removable capsule container seems to have become a standard feature in all single-serve machines, but VertuoLine’s is worth mentioning here because it can hold up to 20 used capsules saving you time and the efforts of removing every single capsule after use.

If the machine remains inactive for 9 minutes, it automatically goes off, which helps to save your domestic energy usage. That is another claim we can say the machine does live up to.

How Does The VertuoLine Work? You know, The Cetrifusion Way

In my experience, making a cup of full crème coffee or espresso with the Nespresso VertuLine is quite easy even for a single-serve coffee machine novice.

Simply press the lever and the machine will spin the capsules at a very fast rate of 7000 revolutions per minute, extracting the best flavor you can get from the coffee and blending it perfectly with water to give you a rewarding cup of coffee or espresso complete with a nice crema.

Each capsule is labeled with a barcode that tells the machine what specific settings and water temperature to use. You personally don’t have to worry about the small details.

When you buy the machine complete with the Aeroccino Plus milk frother you further extend your beverage experience with freshly brewed frothy lattes and cappuccinos. The Aeroccino gives you smooth cold or hot milk froth for your coffee or other favorite recipes. It is a fully automatic system that works fast and without vibrations or noise. Yes, you can use the frother to heat up milk for cappuccino and lattes.

Pros Of VertuoLine Machine

  • The machine gives you fantastic barista-class espresso in the shortest time possible, in fact within a few seconds.
  • Similar to other high-end machines, it gives you two cup sizes, 8 oz. coffee and 1.35 oz. espresso.
  • It is easy to use. Simply press one button and the machine does the rest to give you a nice cup of freshly brewed coffee or espresso.
  • The Nespresso Club service is quite efficient and fast. They respond to any query email in less than 24 hours.
  • Compared to the functions it serves, it is relatively small and won’t take up much of your kitchen space.
  • It provides decent crema and flavor for your coffee
  • It is quite easy to clean. The pod ejects automatically and the milk frother can be cleaned separately.
  • It is well designed with heavy-duty components for durability.

Cons of VertuoLine Coffee Maker

  • Unlike other Nespresso products, it is bigger and lacks the elegant design expected from Nespresso. However, it compensates this with great performance, durability, and consistency.
  • At this price tag, it is slightly more expensive than other coffee makers.
  • There are fewer capsule varieties to choose from compared with other machines. The machine can only use 4 espresso capsules and 8 coffee capsules.
  • It is a new product that’s currently available in the US only.
  • There have been concerns about the temperature of coffee being low.
  • Purists claim that the crema standard is more foam than crema, but purists will always come up with outrageous criticism all the time.
  • Ordering pods is sometimes an inconvenience.
  • Some claim that the technology involved is way above them, but you simply need to insert the pods, push the lever, and get a refreshing cup of coffee. No need to bother about technology if you don’t feel so inclined.

Verdict Of Nespresso VertuoLine Review – Easy Barista-Class Coffee Every Time

We can attest that Nespresso really did go to great lengths to design this revolutionary machine that is well suited for guys who love their coffee perfectly filtered and flavored. The new

Nespresso incorporated the new technology in this machine – and it’s quite useful too. For instance, capsule recognition technology using barcode reading saves you the time and efforts of having to manually tweak the settings every time you prepare a different flavor of coffee or espresso.

Unlike its counterpart models, the Nespresso VertuoLine is easier to use, especially since it has automatic features such as ejection of used capsules. It is an excellent single cup coffee machine, especially when used with the Aeroccino Plus milk frother for added crema luxury.

As we’ve seen in this Nespresso VertuoLine review, it’s quite an impressive machine that heats up pretty fast in just fifteen seconds. It is simple to use and will not take up a whole acre of your kitchen area.

My Honest Thoughts About This New Nespresso Wonder

The single-serve coffee machine is a relatively new coffee maker and still to prove itself over time. However, judging from customer reviews and our experience, we can authoritatively say that it really delivers as promised.

It is the best option in the market for anyone who loves to explore different flavors of coffee or if you are an espresso aficionado.

However, keep in mind that at this price range, it costs a little bit more than other single-serve machines. It is also a bit bulkier and not as elegantly designed as other Nespresso products.

It seems the manufacturer this time concentrated more on performance than style. You can only use 4 espresso capsules and 8 coffee capsules on this machine, which is a bit limiting in my opinion.

All in all, the Nespresso VertuoLine is a recommended single-serve coffee maker that will serve you efficiently for years to come.

  1. I have had one of these since Christmas 2016. While it makes very good coffee (I have had Kuerigs and they just did not do it for me), it seems like it takes Divine Intervention to order the capsules. I have tried ordering through Amazon, until they started playing a game of “Exclusive for Prime Members”, Nespresso has a $50.00 minimum on online orders (no minimum at the shops), and the shop in Boston is in an area were it is nearly impossible to find parking on the weekend. As good as this machine makes coffee, I’m afraid it may wind up in the basement back in its box because I cannot use it due to the difficulty getting the pods.

Poor marketing if you ask me.

  2. I’ve had various Nespresso machines for the last 15 years and have always ordered pods through the Nespresso club. I’ve found it easy, and most of all, very fast. I always get my pods within a couple of days of ordering which is remarkable for anything ordered in Canada! The small espresso from the Vertuoline tastes perfect but I find 8 oz pods to be bitter in taste. I have to remove some of the crema and fuss around adding hot water and milk. Maybe I have to dig the ugly Keurig from my basement! Bah!

  3. I have had my Vertuoline for 2 years and sadly,, have had issues with the crema not performing the entire time. I will have excellent creamy full on crema for several weeks, then it will dwindle cup by cup down to a skiff of bubbles. I have even returned my machine twice for repairs. Apparently they replaced a part. Eventually, after about 2 plus weeks the crema will return for a few, then gone again. This time I have not had crema for about a month. Annoying.
